Without the Internet and access to alternative news, America would be a sad place. As newspapers and magazines seem to be going under or being bought by other media sources or big companies, access to diverse opinions seems to be shrinking. It is detrimental that people have access to other media sources through outlets such as satellite Internet. The Internet is an incredible resource for becoming an aware citizen. Whether you are liberal or conservative, rich or poor, young or old, you can find a website that suits your interests and know that the news is less biased than anything you will find in the mainstream media. Sadly, it seems that the mainstream media is often censored and provoked by dollars. There are thousands of news sources on the Internet, some great, and some not so great. Here are some of my personal favorites.

1. The Huffington Post (www.Huffingtonpost.com) – The Huffington Post, started by author and political buff Arianna Huffington, is a great place to find news about politics, the world, entertainment, etc. It is also a great place to watch videos and view photos. With countless celebrity guest bloggers, this site never gets dull. It is always fun to read what your favorite stars have to say about world issues. My personal favorite is Alec Baldwin. Baldwin, a Huffington Post regular, never fails to deliver some comic relief in these trying times in American politics. Obviously filled with primarily serious, well-written, intelligent news, the Huffington Post also has a lot of fun parts. For example, there is a photo essay, titled, “Sasha Obama’s Sassiest Moments,” where you are exposed to Barack Obama’s youngest daughter’s silliest poses.

2. Politico (Politico.com) – Politico.com is a great, well organized political blog that covers a vast variety of political stories. With newspapers or magazines you are forced to wait days, weeks, or sometimes even months to read articles from your favorite columnists or read about the latest events, whereas with satellite internet broadband and websites such as Politico.com, this is not the case. Politico.com is constantly being updated, and with satellite broadband, you can keep up to date with the ever changing political world. Another one of the best things about Poltico.com and most media websites in general is that you can search the website. Most websites have a search engine within them, and you can instantly have access to all of the articles written by your favorite columnist or all of the articles written about a particular topic of interest.

3. Democracy Now (DemocracyNow.org) – Democracy Now is a daily TV/radio program hosted by Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzaez that actually airs on over 800 stations nationwide. Amy Goodman is a concise and passionate journalist who can clearly explain the happenings in the world in an easy to understand fashion, yet still filled with intense emotion. The website gives it’s audience access to the full length TV and radio program, as well as access to articles and much much more.
